One of the sectors hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic is the travel and border management sector. Mobility was significantly curtailed around the world in order to prevent travel from becoming a vector for spreading the pandemic. As countries attempt to restart the flow of travelers, a new set of challenges have emerged around safety and global public health. This has stimulated a significant amount of innovations that leverage contactless biometrics, better data analytics, digital and mobile identity, and redesigned flows to ensure the safest possible movement of people. It is expected that modernization and relaunch of travel across land and air borders will also improve efficiency through automation (eGates) which would help restore or increase the capacity of travel and border control even while maintaining social distancing. How this is done and what the tradeoffs are, is the subject of this must-attend symposium.

This has become even more clear during the COVID-19 pandemic. A robust national ID is an enabler of more efficient public policy that adds convenience and empowers the individuals. While that is now a commonly accepted view, there are many ways in which the identity can be credentialed and empowered. Among those mobile identity platforms occupy a prominent role among the possible derived credentials that rely on a single source of truth but adapt to the user needs in terms of how the credential is deployed. This is a two-part symposium that will explore options governments can consider when it comes to choosing how they deploy credentials so they can meet the use cases desired by their populations in offline and online contexts: the idea is that one unique identity rules over a multiplicity of digital identities and secure credentials.
